Del Mar Mesa

Del Mar Mesa sits atop a spectacular plateau overlooking Carmel Valley and Los Peñasquitos Canyon. The Mesa is comprised of just 685 homes on the 2,042 acres of land that make up this neighborhood. These homes are mostly found in small enclaves of luxury estates and custom builds. Thirty-two homes are in the gated community of The Preserve and 17 semi-custom homes are in the Whitehorse development. Additionally, other developments in Del Mar Mesa include Duck Pond Ranch, Three Canyons, Anderson Ridge, The Meadows, Silver Oaks Estates, Paso Fino, Valencia Collection, Bougainvillea and Alta Del Mar. Over 900 acres is preserved open space and protected habitat. The community also boasts 10 miles of hiking, biking and riding trails. Horse ranching is still practiced in this area. Interestingly, a number of artifacts, including pottery, possibly dating back 9,000 to 10,000 years ago, were found in the canyon, and are being studied by the San Diego Archaeological Center. Over 500 plant species, more than 175 types of birds, and great variety of reptiles, amphibians and mammals define the rich bio-diversity of the canyon. Many of these species are rare or endangered and are protected within the preserve. Many different geologic formations and soil types make up the steep slopes, riparian stream corridors, flat mesa tops and grassy hillsides.

 

Other nearby recreational areas include the Torrey Pines State Reserve, Del Mar Fairgrounds, Del Mar Racetrack and several pristine beaches.
